This week is my spring break. That's right–-senior year, last spring break ever–-party time, right?
Wrong!
It turns out that I have an anatomical defect, or at least that's what I was told by the periodontist that I was referred to from my regular dentist. I have gum recessions on two teeth, which require gum grafts to prevent losing the teeth or requiring additional surgery sometime in the future. So being the smart, studious student that I am, I decided to schedule the procedure during spring break so that I wouldn't miss too many days of school! Fun. Times.
Today I am four days post-op and recovering well. I am still limited to eating only soft foods and I am banned from drinking alcohol and brushing my teeth, but luckily, I am perfectly content enjoying my Starbucks java chip frap with a spoon instead of a straw!
Today I also began studying for the second round of midterms which for me includes a molecular biology test and a philosophy test next week. I will admit that it is really nice to not have to go to class for an entire week, and given the excuse that I just had oral surgery, I was able to avoid a few days of work as well.
So here I sit in my apartment on a Tuesday evening, reading about topoisomerases, gyrase, and nucleosomes while playing reruns of Grey's Anatomy in the background and pondering my future. I should be hearing from my third interview school any day now and the anticipation of the news is becoming a bit annoying. Should I go there if I am accepted? What about apartments and roommates? In-state vs. private school tuition? Quality of the programs? I guess the up side to the situation now is that I don't know anything yet. I have one acceptance which, in the long run, is all that I need, and I am extremely grateful to have made it this far.
So all I have to do now is wait. Oh, and I also must enjoy my last spring break ever. This time next year, I will have my head crammed full of so much important medical knowledge. I'm so excited!
